6 New Sports & Games to Try Out on Your Backyard Multi-Sport Athletic Court
When you invest in a multi-sports athletic court, you’re not just getting a place to play your chosen sports. There are many other games you can play on your court, from old classics like dodgeball to newer games like handball. There is no end to the fun and entertainment you can get from a backyard multi-sports court.
C&C Courts, a Minnesota-based sports court builder, has researched some of the best games you can play that require minimal equipment in addition to your sports court. Let the fun begin!
1. Spikeball
Spikeball is a four-player game that involves a small trampoline and a ball. In teams of two, the players take turns hitting the ball off the trampoline. The goal is to make it difficult for the opposing team to return it.
When serving, you must hit the ball off the trampoline to the opposing team. Each team has three touches to return the ball (like in volleyball), and the ball must always hit the trampoline before going to the opposing team. There are no boundaries, and the teams are free to move all the way around the net.
2. Futsal
Futsal is a team that is perfect for a large group and is similar to soccer. This game is faster-paced and more intense than soccer, and there are more opportunities to score. You need about ten players–five per team, including the goalkeeper.
Futsal is typically played on a smaller soccer field or on your multi-sport athletic court and utilizes two nets and a low-bounce ball. The objective is to score goals by getting the ball into the opposing team’s net.
The matches consist of two 20-minute halves. There are no wall boundaries, so if the ball goes out of bounds, the game restarts with a kick-in. The goalkeepers can only hold the ball in their area for 4 seconds. Finally, fouls are penalized with free kicks or penalty shots.
3. Paddle Tennis
Paddle tennis is similar to tennis, pickleball, and padel. It can be played with two or four players and uses a smaller court than a tennis court. You will need solid paddles and a lower net, so a pickleball setup would work well.
You score points by hitting the ball into the opponent’s court in a way they can’t return. You must serve underhanded and diagonally across the net. The ball can only bounce once on each side before being returned. Scoring is similar to tennis (15-30-40-game). You can play multiple sets, as most games are played with six sets.
4. Roller Hockey
If you are a hockey fan, then roller hockey can help keep your skills sharp over the summer. Roller hockey is played on a hard surface, such as a roller rink. Players wear inline skates and use roller hockey sticks.
The puck is substituted for a rubber ball. Each team has five players, including the goalkeeper. As with ice hockey, you need to score points by hitting the ball into the goal. Games are divided into 2 or 3 periods of 15-20 minutes each.
Penalties are awarded for infractions such as tripping or high-sticking, and body checking is much more limited than in ice hockey.
5. Handball
Handball is a game similar to soccer, but you get to use your hands. Each team is made up of 7 players– 6 field players and one goalkeeper. This game is played on a court slightly larger than a basketball court, but your multi-sport athletic court can work just fine. The objective of handball is to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s net.
There are a few rules, however. Players can only take three steps with the ball before passing or shooting. Dribbling is allowed, but not double-dribbling. Only the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area, which is a 6-meter semicircle. Games are played in two 30-minute halves.
6. Dodgeball
Ready for a blast from the past? Try playing dodgeball! It works well on a multi-sport athletic court, as you just need two sides divided by a line. You can have teams of 6 to 10 players, depending on the size of your court. The objective is to eliminate all the players on the opposing team by hitting them with a ball or catching their throws.
The game starts with players running to the center line to pick up a ball. Players are out if they are hit by a ball or if someone catches their throw. Eliminated players must wait on the sidelines and can be brought back in if a teammate catches a ball. The game ends when all players on one team are eliminated.
