7 Things to Consider for a Multi-Sport Athletic Court

When you close your eyes, you can see it… Your brand new backyard game court design is perfect for spending quality family time enjoying all your family’s favorite sports and recreational activities!

But before you can lace up your sneakers and show off your skills, it takes much consideration on your part to adequately prepare for making your dream court become a reality.

Designing a multi-sport athletic court requires several considerations before construction begins. Not only should it meet the various standards for each sport, but it should also provide a safe and functional playing surface. That way, you can enjoy your court without worrying about potential injury.

C&C Courts can help you design and build your dream multi-sport athletic court, so let’s check out the seven things to consider before moving forward with installation!

1. Size & Layout

The first thing to do is determine the available space and dimensions for each sport you intend to play. Since different sports have different size needs, the court needs to be big enough to accommodate each one. Your court will then have the correct lines painted for each sport.

There are many factors that contribute to the cost of a sports court, like a basketball court for example. Size and layout are one of those factors.

If you want to get an idea of how your sports court might look, you can check out our “Design a Court” feature to see a 3D rendition of a court.

While you are designing your court, you can also consider the markings and boundary lines needed for the sports you want to include on your court. You can also plan for a dual-court design so two games can be played at the same time.

2. Surface Material

C&C Courts has three top options for athletic court surface materials. Each surface type meets certain safety standards to help keep players from harm while enjoying the court. We also have indoor surfaces for competitive and home sports courts.

The three types are PowerGame, PowerGame+, and SportGame PB.

PowerGame

While PowerGame is the most basic option, there’s nothing basic about it. PowerGame has been tested and proven for superior gameplay. It’s one of the most advanced athletic surface technologies available on the market.

PowerGame has excellent traction and reduced abrasion materials to provide a safer play surface. PowerGame also has Lateral Forgiveness, which helps decrease joint fatigue and stress while allowing for optimal ball bounce performance.

PowerGame+

PowerGame+ is like PowerGame but taken to the next level. PowerGame+ provides the best traction capabilities and a high-impact polypropylene surface that is the highest-rated outdoor game surface available.

SportGame PB

SportGame PB is a versatile and durable game court surface. It is best used for pickleball but can be retrofitted over most existing hard surfaces. It has precise call control capabilities and Lateral Forgiveness technology. It also has a higher shock absorption potential.

3. Net Systems & Goal Posts

If your multi-sport athletic court accommodates sports like volleyball, tennis, or basketball, then you need to consider which goalposts and nets you’ll need for your court. Adjustable goalposts and netting systems make it easy to switch between sports.

You will also want to consider durable and weather-resistant systems to survive Minnesota’s weather. Your netting and goals should also consider safety, including padding and breakaway features for basketball hoops to help avoid injury.

4. Drainage & Irrigation

Proper drainage is crucial to prevent water accumulation on the court surface. A suitable drainage system is important to ensure water drains away, which also helps avoid slippery surfaces. Irrigation can help keep the court surface in optimal condition.

5. Maintenance & Upkeep

You will also have to consider the maintenance requirements of the surface material and a plan for regular upkeep. This could include cleaning, resurfacing, repairing damage, and inspecting the equipment to ensure safety.

In Minnesota, winters can be harsh, so maintaining your sports court is essential to keeping it ready for the next season. Performing fall and winter maintenance can help your sports court last longer.

6. Safety Considerations

Safety should always be a top priority. Install proper padding or safety barriers to protect players from potential collisions. Adequate lighting should also be provided for playing at night.

Our specialized sports court surfaces are also great for safety considerations. They’re made to handle the impact of movement, absorbing the shock so your body doesn’t have to.

7. Opportunities for Exercise

Building a game court in your backyard is a great way to get more exercise and keep your kids active throughout the summer. With a multi-sport athletic court, you and your family will always be energized, with a neverending cycle of games to play using different sports configurations.

If you or your child needs to keep your skills sharp, you can perform drills and workouts for your sport, such as volleyball drills, to help you improve your game. Or, if you’re looking for more recreational activities to get involved with, your multi-sport athletic court design can cater to more casual leisure opportunities, like getting on the trend of pickleball, a popular sport sweeping the nation!
