Designing a Backyard Tennis Court That Mimics Pro-Level Play
Are you ready to up your tennis game? Building your own backyard tennis court can help you get more practice without the inconvenience of traveling to a court to play. But if you’re going to build a tennis court, why not build one that the pros would envy?
At C&C Courts, we love building professional-level tennis courts. Our expert designers and builders can help you choose the right dimensions, surface, and accessories to give you a leg up on the competition. With your own place to practice, your tennis skills will rapidly develop.
Let’s look at how you can design a pro-level backyard tennis court this summer!
Court Dimensions and Surface Material
To replicate a professional-level tennis court, it should follow standard regulation dimensions. This means for a singles court, it should be 27 feet wide x 78 feet long, and a doubles court should be 36 feet wide x 78 feet long. Each court should have 10 feet of clearance behind the baselines and 6 feet on each side for safe movement. Avoid placing fencing or other barriers within those boundaries.
For tennis court surface materials, you want something with good traction and ball control. It is also helpful if the surface material can reduce joint stress and low abrasion to help you avoid injuries. C&C Courts loves to use PowerGame and PowerGame+ for the backyard tennis courts we build.
Both of these outdoor surfaces are robust and durable for tennis matches and come with excellent warranties against defects. With patented Lateral Forgiveness technology, you can play through long practice sessions without joint stress or fatigue. These surfaces also help you avoid having to resurface your backyard tennis court, like you would with concrete.
Regulation-Quality Net System
To ensure you are practicing with a regulation net, make sure it is 42 inches high at the posts and 36 inches at the center. To maintain the proper height, you can use a center strap. Choose a durable net with a metal cable and double-stitched edges to withstand outdoor elements. In addition, the posts should be secured with cement footings for stability and longevity.
Lighting for Optimal Night Play
Don’t limit yourself to only practicing during the day. WIth proper lighting around your tennis court, you can practice after dark. To play like the pros, consider installing LED court lighting, which should be positioned to reduce shadows and glare.
Four to six 20-30 foot poles with lights angled downward at a 45 degree angle can help you make the most of your tennis court. For a tournament-style experience, opt for 500-1000 lux illumination, and incorporate motion sensors and times to improve energy efficiency.
Windbreakers and Fences
To help stabilize ball movement and improve visibility, you can install windbreakers. Mesh windscreens with 50-80% opacity should be installed along the fence lines. In addition, a 10-12 foot chain-link fence prevents balls from leaving the court and protects the surrounding areas. Padding on fence posts can add an extra layer of safety should a player lose their footing.
Ball-Return Systems for Solo Practice
You may not always have a partner to play with, so incorporating a ball-return system can give you extra practice time on your own. You can install rebound walls designed as angled walls that simulate real-game returns.
Automatic ball machines can provide additional return practice, as they are adjustable for speed, spin, and trajectory, allowing you to match pro-level drills. Finally, a retractable netting system can catch balls and funnel them back for continuous play.
