Regulation Standards for Backyard Basketball Courts
If you’ve considered building a backyard basketball court, now is the time to start planning! Whether you want to get your kids more active or practice your own basketball skills, a backyard basketball court is a great place to get reacquainted with the sport you love.
However, a lot of planning must go into building a basketball court in your backyard. Part of the planning includes the court’s dimensions, which can factor into the cost of a backyard court. Even if you have a small backyard, a smaller basketball court can fit, though you might not have standard, regulation dimensions. If you have a lot of space, then you have more freedom and flexibility to design a basketball court.
C&C Courts has put together this guide about regulation standards for backyard basketball courts so you can practice your shot like the pros!
NBA Regulation Sizes
For college and professional basketball courts, you’re looking at a 94-feet-long by 50-feet-wide court. However, this may not be necessary for a backyard court, depending on what you’re looking for.
NBA Half Court
An excellent option for a home basketball court is a half-court. An NBA regulation half-court is 47 feet long by 50 feet wide. If you have enough space for a regulation half-court, then you can still get in practice and 3v3 games without too much trouble. Plus, you can play some one-person basketball games to improve your skills.
Foul Line or Free Throw Line
A standard foul or free throw line is 15 feet from the front of the backboard, and that is the same across all courts. In NBA and FIBA, the line is 16 feet wide or 12 feet wide for college and under.
Three Point Line
The three-point line is an arc that measures a certain distance away from the basket, depending on the level of basketball.
-
High School: 19.75 feet away
-
NCAA: 20.75 feet away
-
WNBA and FIBA: 21.65 to 22.15 feet away
-
NBA: 22 to 23.75 feet away
Best Backyard Court Sizes
For a full range of the three-point line, your basketball court needs to be about 45 feet wide, though the ideal is 50 feet wide. At C&C Courts, we suggest building a court that is 30 feet by 50 feet, which is regulation basketball width, and the 30 feet gives you 5 feet of room at the top of the key.
Caring for Your Backyard Basketball Court
It is important to note that you must care for your basketball court in the fall and winter to ensure its durability. Some fall and winter maintenance tips for basketball courts include:
-
Regular cleaning by removing dead leaves and organic material
-
Inspect for damage
-
Trim surrounding vegetation
-
Pressure wash the surface
-
Protect from ice and snow
-
Do not use de-icer on your court
-
Cover the court if possible
